100 Buku Untuk Seumur Hidup

Saya tidak tahu apakah akan melanjutkan membaca buku ini. Sekarang sih masih mandek. Tapi sebenarnya saya sangat suka temanya. Buku ini bisa dibilang semacam jurnal Will Schwabbe mengenai hari-hari terakhir ibunya, Mary Anne, yang menderita kanker pankreas. Jauh sebelum Mary Anne sakit, ibu-anak ini sudah sering berbagi tentang buku-buku yang mereka baca, karena keduanya pembaca kelas berat. Namun sejak ibunya sakit, kegiatan ini menjadi semakin intens karena…yah…buku apa pun yang sedang mereka baca bersama saat itu bisa jadi merupakan buku terakhir yang akan dibaca ibunya. Maka muncullah ide Will untuk ‘membentuk’ klub buku yang hanya beranggotakan dua orang. Sambil menemani ibunya kemoterapi, atau sekadar saling bertelepon di tengah kesibukan masing-masing (ibunya aktivis sosial dengan jadwal yang luar biasa padat), mereka bertukar kesan dan pendapat tentang sebuah buku. Dan membahas buku ternyata membuka jalan bagi mereka untuk membicarakan kehidupan, orang-orang yang mereka sayangi, masa lalu dan masa kini, yang mungkin tidak akan pernah mereka bicarakan andai tidak ada klub buku.

No matter where Mom and I were on our individual journeys, we could still share books, and while reading those books, we wouldn’t be the sick person and the well person; we would simply be a mother and a son entering new worlds together. (hal. 32)

Dan terutama, The End of Your Life Book Club memberi ide tentang daftar buku yang layak dicatat dan mungkin layak dijadikan ‘tantangan’ untuk dicentang satu demi satu sampai sudah dibaca semuanya. Walaupun ada beberapa buku yang jujur saja tidak menarik minat saya  dan tampaknya tidak akan saya cari dan baca. Kumpulan puisi W.H. Auden? Terima kasih banyak 😀
